Using Adam Goodes’ book, Somebody’s Land, as a foundation for truth telling, together we had a yarn about whose land we are on. Through this, children understood the true meaning behind the acknowledgment of country they say each day. The colour yellow which we wore this week represents the sun, the giver of life. In simple terms children were explained that the sun gives life to trees and trees in turn give us oxygen which helps humans and animals live. Hence, we are all connected. Children sat in the warmth of the sun, feeling the cool grass and dirt with their bare feet and hands, taking a moment to be grateful and thankful for the sun and the earth, feeling the connection. To give the week’s learnings a more tangible meaning, we added a beautiful yellow wattle plant to our existing native garden and created Warnayarra, the rainbow serpent, as a reminder of our effort towards reconciliation as a school.
